I had been looking at the mini laptops with solid state drives for a couple of months and picked up the HP Mini (Netbook) 1115NR a couple of weeks ago. I booted it up, began writing a text file, went online, and then it died. It had been on for about two hours. After some research online I found out that HP rushed this product to market and that the ‘black screen of death’ is a somewhat common problem. The machine will not boot up at all. The power light goes on, but that is it. Basically the flash drive gets corrupt and cannot be accessed. I returned the laptop and got my money back.

I bought the HP Mini about 5 weeks ago. It has had light use since the purchase. Last night I opened it to use it and the “spine” where the screen meets the keyboard had come loose on the end. The computer still worked but I called HP to report the problem and ask for a warranty repair.
I was on the phone for 1 hour 56 minutes. I had to convince the HP customer service rep (who I don’t believe had ever seen a netbook) that it was BROKEN…that there was nothing we could do over the phone to fix it. They ended up saying I “must have done something to it”.
I think it is defective but regardless, the customer service experience on an almost brand new computer was enough to keep me from buying HP products in the future. I wish I’d bought the Acer netbook that my friend recommended.

I bought this computer from amazon and have been using it for a few days now and I have to say I really like it. I love the portability and battery life and am very satisfied with its abilities. It can be slow and lag sometimes but to be expected from and cheap and portable netbook, but I’ve ordered a 2gb RAM chip(FYI it comes with a 1gbPC2-6400 666MHZ chip, and there is only one SODIMM slot) for $15 for it that should help. The 16 GB hard drive is of course already half filled with windows so I ordered a 8gb sd card for $15 that should help with that. So as long as you have realistic expectations for this netbook, then you will be happy. To be expected, it doesn’t do so well at muti tasking or game playing. Overall I’m loving it compared to by older 17in Acer and I would highly suggest it to anyone wanting a easy, simple, and cheap laptop for word processing and internet.
